FAQ

  • Will therapy help me?

I like to say therapy is like going to the gym for your mind. Challenging ourselves, growing, learning or pursuing a new goal is a form of self care. If you feel there are questions, challenges, or issues you are wanting to explore or understand about yourself, your patterns, or your past, a therapist can support and offer an outside perspective to guide you through this process. No therapist can guarantee that their services will help you. In fact, research shows that most of therapy’s success relies on the alliance and rapport between the therapist and client. This is why it is so important to find someone you feel comfortable and connect with. Sometimes therapy can make things harder before they get easier. It can lead to difficult truths, deeper understanding with heavier emotions, or realizations that cause transitions in your life. I will be there to support you as you explore whatever comes up!

  • What is sex therapy?

I recommend sex therapy for folks who are dealing with physical concerns during intimacy such as erectile dysfunction, rapid or delayed ejaculation, pain during sex, trouble reaching orgasm, and many other common issues. Other common topics include differences in desire, communication difficulties, ruptures of trust, differing sexual preferences, etc. In sex therapy, we will explore the barriers or challenges that affect intimacy in your relationship to self and/or partners. Sex therapy is a safe place to discuss these topics without judgement, and with someone who can offer tools and support for navigating conversations around sex and intimacy. Please book a consult call so we can discuss further!

  • What is disordered eating?

Disordered eating come in all shapes, sizes, and styles. They do not have a “look” and they often fall into a category of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) as “Unspecified” for this reason! An extreme fixation on the way you look, or weight loss, an obsession with the gym, healthy foods, or “wellness” could also be signs of disordered habits. You don’t need a full blown diagnosis to get help. If you find yourself frequently distracted, troubled, or affected by thoughts about food, exercise, or your body - it may be helpful to seek support! You can read more about eating disorder behaviors in my blog!

  • What are your beliefs about race and gender?

My practice is a welcoming space for people of all genders, races, body sizes, cultures, and sexual orientations. While I myself, am a CIS white woman, I actively address and work at deconstructing my privilege every day (something I know I will never be done with)! I am in an interracial relationship myself, and love working with couples coming from different racial/cultural/economic backgrounds who are exploring their differences and understanding how it affects their partnership. I will always do my best to ensure you feel accepted, cared for and seen, but I will always be open to feedback or being called in if I were to slip up.

  • Do you take insurance?

I am an out-of-network provider, which means I am not contracted with insurance companies. However, I can provide you with a "superbill" receipt to submit to your insurance company for a possible out-of-network reimbursement.

*Please know that insurance companies require a diagnosis in order to receive reimbursement since insurance providers require that mental health treatment meet "medical necessity" in order to be reimbursed.

Please contact your insurance company and ask about your "out-of-network mental health benefits" to learn more.

  • Who do you work with?

I work with teens, adults, and couples. I offer relationship counseling, sex therapy, couples counseling, discernment counseling, infidelity counseling, communication discrepancies, eating disorder treatment, anxiety, depression, trauma, body image issues, life transitions, stress, perfectionism and high functioning women with anxiety. My clients are all over California, but many of them are in Sacramento, Elk Grove, Roseville, Fair Oaks, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. If there is an issue you want to work on that I did not list, book a consult and we can discuss whether we could be a good fit. I will help you find someone who is, if it isn’t me!

  • Where is your practice?

I only offer online sessions at this time. While there are mixed opinions on this, there is limited research showing any significant differences between virtual and in-person therapy. Virtual therapy allows people who feel nervous about going in person a safe and comfortable space to try something new. It also means you can be in your own private and cozy home/car/space and where pajamas (if you want)! This comfort allows many to jump right into the harder or deeper stuff, instead of being nervous and sticking to small talk.

  • What is the difference between coaching and therapy?

I am only able to practice therapy with clients living in California. I offer coaching as an option to clients internationally. Coaching tends to be more direct, guided, and goal oriented (but this is not always the case!). Often times, therapy is a space for processing, building more understanding, and healing. Coaching can be this, but it can also come with homework assignments, more directed questions, often aimed at reaching a specific goal(s). Please book a consult to discuss further!

  • How do I know if I have an eating disorder?

There are many different types of eating disorders that vary in severity and symptoms. In my practice, I treat those experiencing Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder, Binge Eating Disorder, Orthorexia, and Other Specified Food and Eating Disorder. I also treat those who do not meant criteria for any of these diagnoses, but are experiencing symptoms of disordered eating or struggling with body dysmorphia. All of these diagnoses have specific criteria and the individual must be engaging in behaviors for the last three months to meet criteria for the diagnoses. All that being said, I think it is important to focus on the ways your behaviors are affecting your life, regardless of whether they meet criteria for an eating disorder or not. Having a fixation on health and wellness or working out, to the degree that it has a negative impact on your life, might be something worth addressing - and I am here to help!
